Kenya Kiambu Mandela Estate Peaberry

Kenya Kiambu Mandela Estate Peaberry

This selection continues our preference for Peaberry coffee. This small coffee estate lies within the Kiambu District, near the Gatamaiyo Forest Reserve. The estate is a network of small plots of land rented by a single owner and farm manager, Louis, where he grows coffee and sells under under a single name, Mandela. Both he and his brother have been farming coffee in this area for some time, and together they share a central milling facility where the coffee is processed down to the dry parchment, before being sent to a larger dry mill where it is prepared for export. Buying from an estate means the coffee all comes from a single source versus co-ops where you’re buying hundreds (or more) blends; and in the case of Mandela, the single source is outstanding.

You can smell citrus and dark sugar from the freshly ground coffee. Raw sugar sweetness ramps up after the cup cools down a bit, and fruited flavors of black currant, golden raisin, and cherimoya help construct a complex cup profile.

This coffee is part of the 'Farm Gate' program from our friends at The Coffee Shrub, which means they have negotiated directly with the farmer, and guarantee prices that are at least 50%, and often more than 100%, over fair trade.
